Modern Architecture in Los Angeles
Contemporary Homes Shaped with a Southern California Sensibility
Donaldson + Partners designs modern and contemporary homes across Los Angeles's most distinctive residential landscapes, from clifftop parcels in Trousdale Estates and canyon sites in the Pacific Palisades to hillside properties above Beverly Hills and coastal lots along the Malibu shoreline. The work responds directly to each site's specific relationship between terrain, light, and the city that spreads below.

A Modern Response to Los Angeles's Residential Landscape
Los Angeles is not one place. It is a collection of distinct micro-geographies, each with its own terrain, its own light, and its own logic for how a house should sit on the land. The clifftops of Trousdale Estates look west to the Pacific across the full sweep of the basin. The canyon sites of the Pacific Palisades nestle into hillsides adjacent to the Santa Monica Mountains, where the Santa Monica State Park presses against residential parcels and the landscape moves through properties as much as around them. Malibu places architecture in direct conversation with the ocean, where the horizon is always present and the light shifts constantly between the water and the sky. Each of these landscapes demands a different response. Each rewards a design approach that begins with the site rather than a predetermined style.
The residential neighborhoods of the Westside sit within one of the world's most significant concentrations of modern architecture. Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Holmby Hills carry a lineage that includes Rudolph Schindler, A. Quincy Jones, Paul R. Williams, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra. Working in this context means engaging seriously with that history while producing something that belongs to its own moment. The best contemporary homes in Los Angeles do not compete with their predecessors. They continue the conversation.
Donaldson + Partners has designed custom homes throughout this landscape, from large-scale residences in Trousdale Estates to canyon properties in the Pacific Palisades and coastal sites along the Malibu shoreline. Each project begins with a thorough reading of the site: its topography, its views, the path of the sun across the seasons, and the specific quality of light at different hours. Those conditions become the starting point for every design decision. The result is architecture that feels rooted in its place, designed to endure, and calibrated to the way life is actually lived in Southern California.
